Why is Covisheild in the News Lately? Should Indians Panic?

In a recent turn of events, the COVID-19 vaccine, Covisheild, has been in the news. The reason? The Global pharmaceutical manufacturing company AstraZeneca has admitted that the vaccine can cause a rare blood-clot side effect, Thrombosis Thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), and low platelet count after immunization. This can cause panic around the globe.

What are the Risks Associated with Covisheild?

AstraZeneca admitted that their COVID-19 vaccine, developed by researchers at Oxford University, can cause TSS, a rare side effect. It is a condition that can cause blood clots in the body and low platelet count. The blood clot can travel to the heart or brain and cause stroke or heart attack. This is assumed to be a common side-effect with DNA vaccines like Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. As reported by The Daily Telegraph, AstraZeneca is having a lawsuit in the court for allegedly causing harm and death by their vaccine. The first case was reported in Europe after the vaccination, which halted the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. In India, the same vaccine was manufactured by Pune-based pharmaceutical company Serum Insitute, which is called the Covisheid. Around 90% of the Indians have the Covisheid jab. Since the news has taken global headlines, there has been a panic-like situation.

Should Covisheild Takers in India Worry?

If experts are to be believed, the TTS was reported in the early stages of the pandemic in the European countries. Doctors and epidemiologists have stated that the side-effect is rarest of the rare. Only 7-8 people out of the 1 million likely develop TTS. A senior health ministry official who was part of the vaccination drive said, “ TTS is a very rare side effect, rarer still in Indians and South Asians as compared to Europeans. But there is enough evidence to show that vaccination saved lives — the benefits outweighed the risks”.

Hi there, lovely internet stranger!

Welcome to the ramblings of a person(I don’t call myself a writer) who thrives on coffee more than people ( observing people never hurts). I am not a well known writer, but I bring a different kind of adventure: the kind where sarcasm flows freely and pop culture references become surprisingly profound.

(P.S. If you made it this far, you're clearly a person of exquisite taste.)

Because trust me, after reading one of my pieces, you will want to come back again.
